And choosing the right location can completely change the look and feel of your photographs.
Luckily, there are some beautiful engagement photo locations in Durham Region, from Lake Ontario waterfronts and romantic gardens to forests, trails and elegant historic architecture.
Whether you’re planning engagement photos in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa or elsewhere in Durham Region, here are some of my favourite types of locations to consider.
1. Frenchman’s Bay & Pickering Waterfront – Pickering
If you want romantic waterfront engagement photographs without travelling into downtown Toronto, Frenchman’s Bay is an easy place to start.
The Pickering waterfront gives us a wonderful variety of backgrounds within one area — Lake Ontario, the marina, shoreline, walking paths, beach areas, open sky and the lighthouse.
That variety means your engagement gallery doesn’t have to look like it was photographed in exactly the same spot from beginning to end.
We can start with a relaxed walk along the waterfront, move toward the beach and finish beside the water as the light gets softer.
And when the sunset cooperates?
Even better.

Waterfront locations can be windy, so consider that when choosing your outfit and hairstyle. A little movement can look beautiful in photographs — but there’s definitely a difference between romantic windswept hair and accidentally eating your own hair for 45 minutes.
2. Rotary Park & Ajax Waterfront – Ajax
Another beautiful waterfront option is Rotary Park and the surrounding Ajax waterfront.
This location offers Lake Ontario views along with trails, greenery, open grassy areas and natural shoreline.
It’s a great choice for couples who want their engagement photographs to feel relaxed rather than overly formal.
Instead of standing in one place and posing for every photograph, we can walk, talk and move through the area while creating a mixture of guided portraits and natural moments.
Best for: Relaxed couples and nature lovers
Best season: Spring, summer and fall

3. Parkwood Estate – Oshawa
Want something completely different from the waterfront?
Parkwood Estate offers one of the most elegant engagement photography settings in Durham Region.
With historic architecture, formal gardens, fountains, pathways and beautifully landscaped grounds, Parkwood can create a much more sophisticated and editorial look.
It’s especially beautiful for couples who want to dress up for their engagement session.
Think:
A long dress.
A suit or dress shirt.
Beautiful architecture.
Romantic garden portraits.
Suddenly your engagement session feels almost like an editorial shoot.
Best for: Elegant and romantic engagement sessions
Best season: Spring through fall

4. Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens – Oshawa
For couples dreaming about flowers, greenery and romantic garden photographs, Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens is another beautiful option.
The gardens sit within the Oshawa Creek valley and include landscaped garden areas, mature trees, pathways and seasonal blooms.
One of the highlights is the peony collection, which creates an especially beautiful setting when it’s in bloom.
Of course, flowers don’t bloom on our photography schedule — Mother Nature is apparently not taking bookings.
Even outside peak bloom periods, the gardens and surrounding greenery can still provide lovely backgrounds.

5. Greenwood Conservation Area – Ajax
Greenwood Conservation Area is one of my favourite options for couples who want their engagement photographs to feel natural and outdoorsy.
Instead of manicured gardens or architecture, Greenwood gives us trails, mature trees, open areas and lots of natural texture.
It’s particularly beautiful in fall when the leaves begin changing colour.
This is the type of location where engagement sessions can feel less like a photoshoot and more like going for a walk together — with me occasionally telling you where to stand because the light is gorgeous.
Best for: Nature-loving and relaxed couples
Best season: Spring and fall
Best time: Late afternoon or golden hour
Photography vibe: Natural, warm and romantic
6. Heber Down Conservation Area – Whitby
Another option for couples who love the outdoors is Heber Down Conservation Area in Whitby.
The area offers wooded trails, bridges, open spaces and natural scenery, giving us plenty of opportunities to create photographs that feel peaceful and organic.
It’s particularly suited to couples who would rather wear boots and wander through a trail than dress up for formal estate portraits.
And that’s exactly the point of choosing an engagement location.
It should feel like you.

7. Cullen Central Park – Whitby
Cullen Central Park offers another beautiful mix of greenery and interesting photography backgrounds.

This is a lovely option if you want something natural but don’t necessarily want the beach or waterfront look.

8. Lakeview Park – Oshawa
Lakeview Park is another option for couples drawn to Lake Ontario.
The waterfront setting offers beach and shoreline areas, mature trees and plenty of open sky.
It’s particularly beautiful when we schedule the session later in the day and can take advantage of softer evening light.
Waterfront engagement photographs also work beautifully if you’re planning a summer wedding and want your engagement gallery to have a relaxed, almost date-night feeling.

Which Engagement Photo Location Is Right for You?
Don’t choose your engagement location simply because it’s popular on Instagram.
Instead, think about how you want your photographs to feel.
If you love elegant, polished photographs, somewhere like Parkwood Estate may suit you beautifully.
If you’re happiest near the water, consider Frenchman’s Bay, the Ajax waterfront or Lakeview Park.
If you love nature and want something relaxed, Greenwood or Heber Down may feel much more like you.
And if flowers and romantic greenery are what you’re dreaming about, a garden location might be the perfect choice.
Your engagement photographs should feel connected to who you are as a couple — not like you’re recreating somebody else’s Pinterest board.
Should You Choose a Meaningful Location?
Absolutely.
Some of the best engagement locations aren’t famous photography spots at all.
Maybe it’s where you had your first date.
The trail you walk together every Sunday.
Your favourite coffee shop.
The neighbourhood where you bought your first home.
The place where the proposal happened.
Or even your own backyard.
If a location means something to you, tell your photographer.
Beautiful light and scenery are wonderful, but photographs become even more meaningful when there’s a story attached to the place where they were created.
What Is the Best Time of Day for Engagement Photos?
For outdoor engagement sessions, I often recommend scheduling your session later in the day when the sunlight becomes softer.
This period around sunset is commonly called golden hour.
Instead of the stronger overhead sunlight we can experience in the middle of the day, evening light can be softer and more flattering.
The exact timing changes throughout the year, so your photographer can help determine the best start time based on your session date and location.
And yes — in June that may mean staying out considerably later than it would for an October engagement session.
Ontario likes to keep things interesting.
What Should You Wear for Engagement Photos?
Start by choosing clothing that makes you feel comfortable and still feels like you.
You don’t necessarily need matching outfits. In fact, coordinating usually photographs better than matching exactly.
Neutral colours, soft tones and subtle patterns can work beautifully in natural locations.
If your location is more formal — such as an estate or architectural setting — you might choose a dressier outfit.
Some couples even bring two looks:

Your location should also influence what you wear.
Heels might be beautiful at an estate.
They become considerably less charming when we’re halfway down a muddy conservation trail.

An engagement session gives you an opportunity to:

- Discover which movements and poses feel natural
- Get to know your photographer before the wedding

- Have professional photographs together that aren’t in wedding attire
Most importantly, your wedding day won’t be the first time you’re standing together in front of your photographer’s camera.
By then, you’ll already know what to expect.
Do Engagement Photo Locations Require a Photography Permit?
Some engagement photo locations in Durham Region require a photography permit or charge a fee for professional photography, while others may have different rules depending on the location, season or type of session.
But don’t worry — you don’t need to figure this out on your own.
When choosing your engagement session location, speak with your photographer about which locations require a photography permit and what the current cost may be. Your photographer can help you understand the requirements and factor any permit fees into your location decision before the session is scheduled.
