If you love timeless, romantic wedding photography with an elegant European-inspired feel, Parkwood Estate is hard to beat.
Located in Oshawa, Parkwood National Historic Site offers an incredible combination of historic architecture, manicured gardens, fountains, mature greenery and beautiful architectural details.
From a photography perspective, one of the biggest advantages of Parkwood is the amount of variety you can create without travelling between several locations.
The formal gardens and fountains are perfect for classic wedding portraits, while the mansion provides an elegant architectural backdrop for something slightly more editorial. There are also beautiful pathways, greenery and garden areas that can create softer, more romantic images.
This makes Parkwood particularly beautiful for couples who want their wedding photographs to feel polished, elegant and timeless.

Rather than trying to coordinate all of this yourself, speak with your photographer while planning your portrait locations. Your photographer can help determine which locations require permits, how much time should be reserved and how the location will fit into the overall wedding-day schedule.
Photographer’s tip: If you’re choosing Parkwood specifically for the architecture and formal gardens, give yourself enough time to actually use the variety the property offers. Trying to squeeze an elaborate portrait location into a very short photography window can make the day feel unnecessarily rushed.
2. Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens – Oshawa
For couples dreaming of romantic garden wedding photographs without the formal estate look, the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens are another beautiful option.
The gardens feature landscaped areas, winding pathways, mature trees, architectural elements and water features, giving photographers several different backgrounds within one general area.
During blooming season, the gardens can be especially beautiful, adding colour and texture to wedding portraits without overwhelming the couple.
The combination of greenery, flowers and pathways works particularly well for light, romantic photography.

Head toward the water.
Lakeview Park sits along the Lake Ontario shoreline and offers couples a combination of water views, beach, mature landscaping, trails and open spaces.
It’s especially beautiful for couples who prefer relaxed, natural wedding portraits rather than a highly formal setting.
Waterfront locations can also be incredible later in the day when the light becomes softer and warmer. If the wedding timeline allows it, even a short sunset portrait session can create some of the most beautiful images in the entire wedding gallery.

4. Greenwood Conservation Area – Ajax & Pickering
If your dream wedding photographs involve tall grasses, trees, trails and a more natural landscape, Greenwood Conservation Area is one of my favourite outdoor settings in the area.
Greenwood stretches through parts of Ajax and Pickering along Duffins Creek and has a completely different feel from formal gardens or waterfront parks.
Instead of manicured landscaping, the beauty here comes from nature itself.
Depending on the area and season, you can find wooded trails, open spaces, fields and beautiful natural textures.
In the fall, the changing leaves can make this location especially beautiful. During the warmer months, the greenery creates a soft and organic backdrop that keeps the focus on the couple.

Best for: Couples who prefer an outdoor, nature-inspired look
Best season: Spring, summer and especially fall
Location: Ajax/Pickering, Ontario
Because Greenwood spans conservation lands and different municipal areas, access and photography requirements can vary depending on where you’re planning to photograph. This is another location where it’s best to discuss the exact area with your photographer ahead of time.
Photographer’s tip: Nature locations are usually better suited to couple portraits or smaller groups than very large wedding parties. Trails, uneven ground and longer walking distances are worth considering — especially when everyone is wearing formal shoes!
5. Cullen Central Park – Whitby
Cullen Central Park offers another option for couples who want romantic greenery and gardens without the grand architecture of an estate.
The Whitby park includes picturesque landscaped areas, walking paths and connections toward the surrounding natural trail system.

Another beautiful waterfront option is Rotary Park in Ajax.
Located where Duffins Creek meets Lake Ontario, the area combines shoreline views with trails, greenery and open waterfront spaces.
This can be a great choice for couples who want wedding photographs that feel relaxed and outdoorsy without travelling far outside Ajax.
The waterfront also works particularly well for engagement sessions, so couples who love the area may choose to use it for engagement photographs and save a more formal location for their wedding day.

Millennium Square sits beside Pickering’s waterfront at the bottom of Liverpool Road and overlooks Lake Ontario and Frenchman’s Bay.
The surrounding waterfront area gives couples a mixture of open water, pathways and a slightly more contemporary lakeside feel.
This can work particularly well for couples having their ceremony or reception nearby because minimizing travel on a wedding day is always a bonus.

Summer weekends around Pickering’s waterfront can be busy, and seasonal parking restrictions may also be in effect. Those practical details matter when deciding whether a location works within a wedding-day timeline.
Photographer’s tip: A beautiful location isn’t necessarily the best location if it requires 40 minutes of travel and complicated parking. When possible, I prefer locations that give us beautiful photographs while keeping the couple’s day relaxed.

With so many options, how do you actually decide?
Start with the overall feeling you want your wedding photographs to have.
If you love classic, elegant and editorial portraits, an architectural location such as Parkwood Estate may suit your vision.

And if you prefer something relaxed and natural, Greenwood Conservation Area offers beautiful greenery and outdoor scenery.
As well, if you’re dreaming about waterfront wedding photographs, Lakeview Park, Rotary Park or the Pickering waterfront may be exactly what you’re looking for.
But photography style isn’t the only consideration.
Your wedding-day schedule matters just as much.
Your Wedding Photo Location Should Fit Your Timeline
One of the biggest mistakes couples can make is choosing a portrait location based only on how beautiful it looks.
Imagine your ceremony ends at 3:30 p.m., cocktail hour begins at 5:00 p.m., and your chosen photography location is 25 minutes away.
That sounds like 90 minutes for photographs.
But once you account for gathering the wedding party, getting into vehicles, driving, parking, walking to the photography area and travelling back to the reception, your actual portrait time can shrink very quickly.
This is why I always recommend looking at the entire wedding timeline before deciding where portraits will happen.
Sometimes the most beautiful choice is actually staying at your wedding venue.
If your venue has beautiful architecture, gardens or greenery, we may be able to create an entire gallery of portraits without leaving the property.
Less driving means more time for photographs — and more importantly, more time for you to actually enjoy your wedding.
Don’t Forget About Your Wedding Venue
Before automatically choosing a separate photography location, look carefully at what your venue already offers.
Many wedding venues in Durham Region have beautiful outdoor spaces, gardens, architecture or nearby natural areas that can work perfectly for portraits.
Keeping your ceremony, portraits and reception in one location can make the wedding day significantly easier.
There are fewer transportation logistics, less chance of delays and more flexibility if the timeline starts running behind.
What About Photography Permits?
This is an important part of choosing wedding photo locations in Durham Region.
Some estates, gardens, conservation areas and municipal parks require advance permission or photography permits for professional wedding photography.
Permit requirements and fees can also change.
You don’t need to figure all of this out alone.

That’s why every outdoor wedding photography plan should have a backup.
Depending on your venue and photography coverage, that might mean using a beautiful indoor area at the venue, a covered outdoor space, an indoor photography location or simply adjusting the portrait schedule around the weather.
And sometimes?
We embrace it.
Clear umbrellas, a little rain and the right lighting can create incredibly romantic wedding photographs.
The goal isn’t to obsess over the forecast two weeks before your wedding. It’s to have a plan so that whatever happens, we can keep the day moving.
